Shakuntala Recognized by Dushyanta
Raja Ravi Varma created numerous notable paintings throughout his prolific career, many of which are considered masterpieces and are treasured as important contributions to Indian art history. This painting depicts playful intimacy, Shakuntala casts a tender glance back at her beloved, a mischievous smile gracing her lips as she feigns the removal of a thorn from her delicate foot. With eyes alight with affection, she captures Dushyanta's attention, drawing him into the enchanting dance of their shared affection. In a union forged by the mystical bonds of the Gandharva marriage tradition, Shakuntala and Dushyanta pledged their love to each other beneath the canopy of nature's embrace. As symbols of their sacred bond, Dushyanta bestowed upon Shakuntala his royal ring, a radiant testament to his promise to elevate her to the status of queen in his palace.
